Yesterday was quite a day. We had THREE fawns come in all within hours of each other, all with very sad stories. At this point we aren’t sure if they are all going to survive. They were in very bad shape.
The first one was from a doe who got hit by a car. When the deer hit the ground she did not survive and the impact broke her stomach open. Three fawns popped out. Two of them were dead, but one was thrown a short distance away and was still alive. Wendy Stokes, another local rehabber and a friend of Jim’s was called to come get it. She called Susan and made arrangements to bring the fawn here in the morning. Susan asked her if she knew anyone with goat colostrum. She did!! And she even went and got it and brought some in the morning with the fawn. The fawn ate well, and went to the bathroom, but she was unable to stand. She stood up a few times throughout the day, but still isn’t doing too well. Hopefully she will be ok. (That is the one in the front)
About half hour later another fawn! Bit in the face by a coyote. The people saw something had the baby by the face. They believe it was a coyote. The baby screamed. The mother came running, charged the animal and then the animal came back and chased the mother away. They never saw the mother anymore. The baby was out and crying all during that heavy rain we had. No mother ever came back for it, and the people finally decided it was necessary to reach out to us. He is here, but wheezing badly. At this time we don’t know if it’s from the bite, or if he has a cold or has something else is going on. His mouth and urine were very cold. That is not a good sign, but we are doing our best to help him. (That is the one in the back).
An hour after THIS - a THIRD fawn! (The one in the middle). His Mother was hit a couple of days ago in Middletown and he has also been alone and surviving these storms on his own. When you think that this is a dog crate they are in, you can really understand how small they are,
The first and third deer had the ears curled which is a sign of distress and dehydration.
